Berislav is a glorious Cossack town. The name was given to him, by Decree of Empress Catherine the Great, by Governor-General Prince Grigory Potemkin. The Empress visited the city she named three times, during a trip from St. Petersburg to the Crimea and back. Berislav is the former Turkish fortress of Kyzy-Kermen (Maiden Fortress), conquered by the soldiers of Tsar Peter the Great and the Ukrainian Cossacks-Cossacks led by Ivan Mazepa in 1695. The history of the 500-year-old city of Berislava (bury with glory) is interesting, informative and fascinating.
