The grave of the miners in the city park.
In 1947, by decision of the Krasnodon City Executive Committee, a monument was erected in the city park, at the place of execution and burial of patriot miners, designed by Voroshilovgrad sculptors Viktor Mukhin and Viktor Fedchenko.
The monument is a bowl with a flowing banner of sorrow, mounted on a rectangular pedestal. On the front side of the pedestal is the inscription "The grave of the Krasnodon miners, buried alive, viiskolonenikh chervonoarmiyts, rozstrelyanih fascist occupants in 1942 – 1943 rocks". The surnames are listed below. Below the surnames there is an inscription "that's 26 cholovik, I'm not recognized for the brave katuvannya that strati".
For reference:
On July 20, 1942, the city of Krasnodon was occupied by the Nazis ... the Nazis established their own "order". A council was created, a labor exchange, the police were introduced, and the Gestapo arrived. Immediately after the arrival of the Gestapo, mass arrests began in the city.
The Nazis committed one of their terrible atrocities on the night of September 29, 1942. They buried 32 miners alive in the city park. Having tied up several people with barbed wire, they were driven into a ditch adapted for hiding cars, and covered with earth alive. Conventionally, this group of people is called "miners", but there were people of different professions who refused to work for the enemy. Among those executed, the only woman is E.Sarancha, secretary of the Izvarinsky Village Council. Her father and brother were executed by the fascists earlier, as members of the Izvarinsky partisan detachment.
Having committed a brutal massacre of people, the occupiers intended to intimidate Krasnodon residents. But the reaction of our city was the opposite of what the executioners had hoped for. The response to this tragedy was the creation of the underground organization "Young Guard". In the oath of the Young Guards there are such words "... I swear to avenge the martyrdom of the heroic miners."
From the memoirs of A.A.Puchkov, a respirator of the 7th mountain rescue squad:
"...I also happened to participate in the funeral of 32 patriot miners in the city park. It was an unusual funeral. It was supposed to extract the bodies from the common pit and bury them according to the Russian custom. However, this could no longer be done, since the bodies had been lying underground for several months..."
From the memoirs of I.F.Dobedin, mountain rescuer 2-4:
"...People were very shallow. The hands were tied behind with wire, and then their backs were tied to each other."
The monument is made of plaster. The pedestal is made of brick and cement.
In the 60s - 70s, on the day of the execution of patriots, on September 29, students of the Gorky Secondary School No. 1 held an annual rally at the mass grave dedicated to the memory of the dead.
