In the more than two hundred-year history of the Daugavpils Fortress, there have been many things here: an orphanage, a gendarmerie corps, a fire brigade, the headquarters of the Dvina military district, a camp for Soviet prisoners of war and a Jewish ghetto. And from 1948 to 1993, the Daugavpils Higher Military Aviation Engineering School named after Jan Fabricius was located here, which trained engineers and technicians for the Soviet Air Force.
