The Palace of the Masters or the Rhodes Fortress appeared in the XIV century. The Knights Hospitaller wanted to establish their residence and bought Rhodes for their purpose. The city was ideally suited to create a fort on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
The fortress was created not only for defense, there were meeting rooms inside. At that time, the palace was named Castello.
In the XV century, the Rhodes Fortress was the most perfect defensive fortification. To this day, the walls of the palace are amazing in their size. For more than 200 years, the knights resisted the Muslims. During this time, the fortress withstood two major sieges. In 1480, during the siege, up to 1,000 cannon shells fell on the walls of the fortress. But even this did not break the knights, Rhodes remained under the patronage of the knightly order.
During the reign of the knights, the magisters did a lot for the development of the island. Schools, hospitals, temples, and defensive structures appeared here. In 1522, the fortress fell under the onslaught of the Ottoman Empire, the knights moved to Malta and founded the Order of Malta.
At the beginning of the XX century, the Italians captured the island. And a few years after the capture, the Italians decide to restore the fortress. It was assumed that the palace would become the residence of the country's leaders, including Benito Mussolini. There is a plaque in the fortress mentioning the Italian dictator, but he never visited it.
Now the Palace of Masters can be viewed by anyone, it houses a museum. There are about 200 halls inside, the interior of which is amazing. There is a Hall of Byzantine Icons, a Reception Hall, an Italian Governor's Hall, a Dance hall, and a waiting room.
The halls are decorated with mosaics, frescoes, tapestries and mirrors. Everything reminds us that this is not a simple building, but a real residence of masters.
In addition to the interiors, you can explore the history of the island in the museum. The exposition is divided into two parts: antique and medieval. The collection of exhibits includes archaeological finds, art and household items.
The Grand Master's Palace is one of the main attractions of the old medieval city of Rhodes. An entrance ticket for an adult costs 8 euros, but if you purchase a Combi ticket worth 10 euros, you can also visit the archaeological museum, in a building from 1440, the hospital of the Order of Malta and the Byzantine Church of the Virgin of Castro.
Despite the fact that the palace has been restored and the furniture located there is collected from different collections, it is very interesting to visit there. Imagination makes it clear how the knights lived and what a monumental building they built.
