According to Christian tradition, Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem through the Golden Gate facing the Mount of Olives and Bethany.
The oldest gate of the Old City is located between the Lion Gate and the gate in one of the towers of the eastern wall.Currently they are laid with stone, but the arches marking the entrance are clearly visible on the wall. The Golden Gate consisted of two entrances, called the "gate of repentance" and the "gate of mercy".
According to Jewish tradition, it is believed that it is through this gate that the Messiah will enter Jerusalem. It is believed that at this moment the stones closing the Golden Gate will collapse and those who rest on the western slope of the Mount of Olives, having risen, will be the first to see the Messiah.
Outside, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in 1541 ordered the Golden Gate to be sealed shut to prevent the entrance of the Messiah. He ordered the placement of a Muslim cemetery here, the passage through which, according to Jewish tradition, is forbidden to the Cohens (high priests).
This was done in the hope that the prophet Elijah, who was supposed to announce the coming of the Messiah, would not be able to enter the city through the Golden Gate, since he is a Cohen.
Anyway, the gates are closed until today...And believers are still waiting for a miracle. Who knows what will happen after us...
