On the floor of the grotto you can see the place where, according to church tradition, drops of Christ's bloody sweat melted a cold stone. The Gethsemane grotto is located to the right of the Tomb of the Virgin at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Gethsemane and belongs to the Franciscans since 1392. "Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane and says to the disciples: sit here while I go and pray there..." (Matthew 26:36).The Gethsemane grotto is revered by pilgrims as the place where Jesus and the apostles gathered, where He was betrayed by Judas. Ancient historians testify to the veneration of this grotto as a place of Judean betrayal. Now the Gethsemane grotto is an underground church, the central altar of which is dedicated to the prayer of Jesus.Frescoes and inscriptions have been preserved in the Gethsemane grotto since the time of the Crusaders.
