It is the tallest building in old Khiva, and, according to some sources, with an indicator of 56.6 meters, it turns out to be the second tallest minaret in the world Central Asia (in third place is the Kalyan Minaret in Bukhara — 46.5 meters) on the first — the Kutlug-Timur Minaret in Kunya Urgench - more than 60 meters. However, according to L.Y. Mankovskaya and V.A. Bulatova, the extraordinary upward orientation of the minaret is an optical effect, which is associated with a rapid reduction in the diameter upwards and rhythmic cladding of the tower, whereas the true vertical size of the minaret is only 44.5 meters
The construction of the Islam Khoja minaret and madrasah was started in 1908, on the initiative of the father-in-law and chief vizier of the ruler of the Khiva Khanate Asfandiyar Khan Islam Khoja. Famous architect Khudoibergan Haji, as well as skillful nakkashi (pattern makers) Eshmukhammad Khudoiberdiyev and Bolta Voisov participated in the construction of the minaret and madrasah. The construction of both facilities was completed by 1910
The diameter at the base of the minaret is 9.5 meters. Inside the pillar there is a brick spiral staircase leading to the platform of the rotunda — lantern, supported by protruding rows of masonry, decorated in the form of a magnificent stalactite cornice — sharaf]. At one time, the minaret performed several functions. It was at the same time an observation tower, also had a religious function, in particular it was used for the azan (calling Muslims to prayer) to the nearest mosque. It was also used to invite the population to the nearest square to read the decrees of the rulers and other occasions.
Our grandfather and his equals carried bricks to this Islam Khoja minaret. They were given one walnut for one brick ... children also actively participated in the stands...
