St. Jakub's Church is the most important cultural and tourist site in the Czech Republic.
The construction of St. Jakub's church began in 1228, but the structure of the temple has been preserved to this day, the construction of which lasted from the middle of the 15th to the end of the 16th century. An important element of the church is the church tower with a height of 92 m, it was completed by 1592, thus marking the end of the construction of the temple. Another interesting detail is comic in nature. In the southern part of the tower, a naked statue of a man can be seen above the window, facing backwards towards the old city Hall. According to one legend, in this way the architect expressed his dissatisfaction with the work poorly paid by the city authorities. Others explain the presence of such an immodest sculpture on the church by the author's peculiar sense of humor.
There is a grandiose atmosphere of reverence and grandeur inside the temple. The Gothic columns, rushing upwards, amaze with their size and beauty. Oblong stained glass windows placed around the perimeter of the building fill the temple with daylight, which illuminates all the splendor of the medieval building. In the middle of the temple, on a small elevation, there is a main altar decorated with candles and fresh flowers. The pulpit, created in 1526, deserves special attention, which exquisitely depicts various scenes of biblical writings. To this day, services and church rites are held in the temple.
During some ceremonies, such as baptism, memorial prayer and marriage ceremonies, entry to the temple is prohibited for outsiders.
We were in the car, parked next to the church, didn't quite seem to take into account all the rules, then we got a fine. If this is important to you, consider this point. We booked the hotel nearby, we liked the area.
A beautiful temple. Outwardly ascetic, in the Gothic style. The interior is in the Baroque style, much more interesting. A piquant detail that all the guides pay attention to. Above one window of the south tower, the figures of a man with a bare bottom and a woman. It is clear what they are doing. The naked ass is facing the town hall. The bricklayer was joking. The money was not paid extra. And officials, what in the Middle Ages, what in the present time... When you are in Brno, visit this church. There is a very large bone storage nearby.
