Masca is a village in Spain in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte in the west of the island of Tenerife. The village is located in the mountains in the upper part of the Mask gorge of the same name at an altitude of about 600 meters, 11 kilometers from the municipal center. The village has a permanent population of about 100 inhabitants. One of the most visited tourist destinations in Tenerife. The mask is interesting for its preserved atmosphere of the old Canarian village, as well as the surrounding landscapes around the village. Until the 60s of the twentieth century, it was possible to get into the Mask only by mountain trails, there was no electricity and modern amenities in the village. It was only after the opening of the road from the towns of Buenavista del Norte to Santiago del Teide that the Mask became accessible to people. Currently, the main occupation of the villagers is agriculture and servicing tourists hiking along the Mask Gorge. There are several restaurants and tourist shops in the village. On weekends, there is a museum in the village, which presents household items of previous generations of villagers and the history of tourist routes along the gorge.
The Masque Gorge is one of the deepest in Tenerife. Its maximum depth is about 1300 meters. A popular tourist route with a total length of about 6 kilometers runs from the village of Mask to the ocean. As a rule, tourists come to the village of Mask by taxi, bus or car and go down the gorge from the village to the ocean, where there is a small marina from which they are picked up by tourist ships to the resort of Los Gigantes. The descent takes about 3 hours, the ascent takes about 4 hours for the average tourist. The route is reminiscent of the Samaria Gorge in Crete in terms of the difficulty of passing, the surrounding landscapes and the ways of passing and delivering tourists (car — foot descent — ship). The gorge is now closed for reconstruction.
