The Monastery of Flagellation is a Franciscan monastery located in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, next to the Lion Gate. The monastery complex consists of a chapel of Flagellation and a chapel of Condemnation.
The Chapel of Flagellation was built in 1838 by Franciscan monks on the ruins of a temple from the Crusader period. In the 19th century, the complex was handed over by Ibrahim Pasha to the Franciscans.
In 1929, the chapel was rebuilt by the famous architect of the Holy Land Antonio Barluzzi.
The chapel's landmark are three stained glass windows on evangelical themes: Flagellation, Pontius Pilate washing his hands and the Liberation of Barabbas.
A golden mosaic dome in the form of a crown of thorns rises above the altar.
The Chapel of Condemnation was built in 1903-04 on the foundation of a Byzantine temple. It is believed that a cross was placed on Jesus Christ at this place. The walls inside the chapel are decorated with images of the condemnation of Jesus and His meeting with the Virgin on the Sorrowful Path...
And again you feel the STORY itself around you. I must admit that it gives me the creeps...
