Oskar Schindler is a German industrialist who saved almost 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust by giving them jobs at his factories in Poland and the Czech Republic. This story formed the basis of the book "Schindler's Ark" and the film "Schindler's List" based on it.
O. Schindler was born on 04/28/1908 in the Austro-Hungarian town of Zwittau (now Svitava in the Czech Republic) in a Catholic family. Initially, Schindler led the life of an idle capitalist, seeking profit only in money. Ruined during the "Great Depression", he, a former citizen of Czechoslovakia, was recruited by the Abwehr, but was soon exposed and imprisoned since 1938, when he was released after the Munich Agreement. In 1939, Schindler joined the NSDAP.
However, Schindler's views soon changed dramatically.: after witnessing the raid in the Krakow ghetto in 1942 and realizing all the horrors committed by the Hitler regime against the Jewish population, as well as his involvement in Nazi crimes, he took the position of an absolute humanist, defending Jews without any benefit to himself. On the advice of his accountant, Yitzhak Stern, O. Schindler decided to bargain with high-ranking Nazi officials for the opportunity to accept Jews from the concentration camp, who were in danger of certain death, into his enterprises.Later, the Jews saved by Schindler from death during World War II became known as "Schindler's Jews". The number of people rescued by Schindler is estimated at about 1,200 (800 men, 300 women and 100 children).Schindler managed to take a thousand of his wards to Brenets and thereby save them from the death camps. May 10, 1945, Brenets. He was liberated by Soviet troops.
In 1967, he was awarded the Yad Vashem Award and was named one of those people who deserve to bear the name "Righteous of the World". In the last years of his life, he lived in complete poverty, subsisting on benefits from Jewish organizations and gifts from people he saved.
