The Resurrection Monastery is one of the most wonderful places in Jerusalem. Visiting him is one solid positive. The place is truly amazing and holy (not "trampled" by tourists). The only disadvantage is free access. Not every Israeli car agrees to go to that area. And the door, as they say, is not always open (I really have always been lucky).
The Olivet Orthodox Convent and the Church of the Ascension of the Russian Orthodox Church were built in the period 1870-87 on the top of Mount Olivet. The white Bell Tower of John the Baptist, 64 m high, is a landmark of the Mount of Olives. It is called the "Russian candle", from its observation deck, where a steep staircase leads, the most majestic panorama of Jerusalem opens. The bell tower was built specially high so that pilgrims exhausted from the journey could see it from afar.
The site for the foundation of the monastery on the very top of Mount Olivet near the Chapel of the Ascension was purchased in 1870 by Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), an outstanding church figure and head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem.
The Church of the Ascension was built in the Byzantine style. The main shrine of the temple, the sacred stone of the Virgin, is located at the entrance. The iconostasis was brought from Athos, the icons from Russia. The most revered are the icons of the Mother of God, called the "Olivet Fast-listening" and "Recovery of the Dead."
Fragments of the ancient floor have been preserved in the Church of the Ascension, red bloodstains protrude through the white marble.
These fragments belong to the period of the Persian invasion in 614. According to legend, they then killed 1207 nuns, whose memory is immortalized in a similar way.
The tomb of Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin) is located in the left part of the Church of the Ascension.
After the unification of the Russian Orthodox Church and ROCOR, the Olivet Orthodox Convent belongs to and is part of the united Russian Orthodox Church.
The main event was the discovery of the stone on which the Virgin stood during the Ascension of Her Son.
An honest head of John the Baptist was found on the territory of the Olivet Orthodox Convent.
A Chapel for the Beheading of the head of John the Baptist was built at the site of the finding.
The bell tower of John the Baptist is the highest place on the Mount of Olives.
Its large bell weighing 308 pounds and with a diameter of more than 2 m was brought from Russia in 1885.
The status of the Olivet Orthodox Convent was approved in 1924.
When visiting the Olivet Monastery (by the way, not all nuns are Russian...There are even some from Africa...Russian Russian is something that everyone knows at least!) truly, the words of the classic come to mind: "Here is the Russian Spirit...It smells like Russia here! And it's true...And if in doubt, you can visit the monastery yourself and check my words...
