Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The city is Deep. Belarus.
🍂⛪🍂✝🍂⛪🍂
The cathedral is located in the building of the former Carmelite church, which was erected in 1639-1654 at the expense of Governor Joseph Korsak.
Originally, the church was part of the Carmelite monastery. The temple, towering in the style of the Vilna Baroque, was striking in its grandeur,
In 1812, Emperor Napoleon stayed here when he was on his way to Moscow. He lived in the abbot's chambers for 10 days. And one day he called the abbot and said: "What are your possessions?" – "1,000 huts." "That's a lot, but what do you do?" "And we pray." "That's very little, the emperor said." The abbot remained diplomatically silent. When Napoleon was already leaving, he decided to thank the abbot for his hospitality and ordered to give him some gold coins. "This is too much for an ordinary guest," said the abbot, "but for the great emperor..." He paused. Napoleon understood everything and ordered to pour a whole tray of gold coins.
In 1735, the church was rebuilt according to the project of the famous architect Jan Christopher Glaubitz and became the first example of the architecture of the "Vilna" Baroque in Belarus.
In 1865, after the expulsion of the Carmelites, the monastery was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Chamber of State Property.
In 1875, after a small reconstruction, the church was re-consecrated into the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1895, a large wooden dome was erected over the middle of the temple, which burned down in 1944 and was never restored.
In 1970, Archbishop Anthony of Minsk and Belarus held the first divine service in the church.
The main shrine of the modern temple is the healing icon of the Mother of God "Worthily eat", which was delivered to the city in 911 from Mount Athos. Inside the icon there are particles of the holy relics of the saints of God and pieces of cotton wool consecrated on the Holy Sepulchre.
The cathedral is also interesting for its dungeons. In 1831, the Carmelite monks supported the uprising that broke out at that time, so the dungeon became a place to store an arsenal of weapons, treat the wounded and shelter for the rebels. For several centuries, its cellars served as an underground tomb for monks, and the remains of Joseph Korsak also rested here.
Even nowadays, the remains of wealthy citizens buried in ancient times who were able to buy land under the temple for their burial rest in the dungeon.
During the Second World War, the dungeons served as a prison for prisoners of the "Rodionov Russian Liberation Army", which fought on the side of the enemy. After the war, a cannery warehouse was located in the dungeons, while the temple itself continued to function.
There is an observation deck on the bell tower of the cathedral, located at a height of 34 meters. A stone spiral staircase leads to the middle of the bell tower, and then a wooden one. The bell tower offers beautiful views of the city.
The choir sings beautifully, there is a lot of space, a very Blessed place. It is good that there is a liturgy at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. I recommend it to everyone.
A very beautiful cathedral with the best observation deck on Glubokoe. It is best to go on a guided tour - you will get into the dungeon and to the observation deck. I was without a tour - I was allowed only to the observation deck, for which many thanks to the staff!!!
The cathedral, where you can descend from heaven into the dungeon.
The fundador, the owner of the city, Joseph Korsak, began the construction of the church and monastery in 1639
. In 1864, the monastery was closed for the participation of the Carmelites in the uprising of K. Kalinovsky.
In 1878, the former Carmelite church was consecrated as a church.
After the war , the monastery building was occupied by the Glubokoe Creamery
The miracle of the Cathedral (since 1911) is the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "Worthy to eat" .
Inside the icon are embedded particles of the holy relics of many saints of God and pieces of cotton wool consecrated on the Holy Sepulchre, on the Tomb of the Mother of God, on Golgotha. The icon is sprinkled with holy water from the Jordan River.
!!!The icon is only brought to the center of the cathedral once a year - I was lucky 🤗
⛪ The cathedral's dungeons. There were tombs of monks here, and even the remains of Joseph Korsak were buried. But now all the niches are empty...During the uprising, weapons were stored here, the wounded were treated and the rebels were sheltered. During the Second World War, there was a prison. After the war, it was a cannery warehouse.
Napoleon lived here for 10 days: "I regret that I cannot take the cathedral with me to Paris; the temple of Notre Dame would not be ashamed to have it in the neighborhood."
The cathedral is worth a visit because of the perfectly preserved dungeon. In the dungeon there is a small exhibition of artifacts discovered during the clearing, and you can just wander through the halls and rooms with a flashlight
The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the largest Orthodox churches in our country.
At one time it was a monastery church of the Barefoot Carmelite Order, founded by the headman of Disnensky, voivode of Mstislav Joseph Korsak. The construction of the temple and monastery dates back to 1639.
The Carmelite monks of Glubokoe, as local historians assure, mastered the production of chocolate in the XVIII century, however, for exclusively medicinal purposes. The delicious product was attributed to the ability to cure fever, catarrh of the stomach and even the ability to prolong life. It could only be bought at the monastery pharmacy.
According to the historical descriptions found, at that time the monastery was considered one of the richest in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, it owned a cloth factory, a pharmacy, a hospital, an infirmary, breweries, a brick factory, schools, as well as 11 folwarks, 67 villages with 2,533 serfs, 14 mills and 2 taverns... Well , and on and on . There were 30 monks and 50 novices who lived permanently in the monastery.
In 1720-1730 . The monastery and the church were significantly rebuilt, and the facade of the temple acquired the features of the Vilna Baroque. Probably, the author of the project was the founder of this elegant style Jan Glaubitz himself. But there are other versions.
At the beginning of his campaign, Napoleon stayed at the monastery. He stayed here for 10 days before the attack on Smolensk.
In 1862, the monastery complex was closed. The monks have been expelled.
After major repairs, the church was consecrated in 1878 as a church in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The temple continued to operate throughout the following years.
In the temple there is a particularly revered icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "It is worthy to eat".
I would like to express my special gratitude to Yuri Petrovich Kolbasich, a wonderful local historian and patriot of his native city, for an interesting story and an excursion. He is a wonderful person and a wonderful storyteller. If you are in those parts, be sure to find an opportunity to go on a tour with him.
The monastery building is now abandoned and is being destroyed. It's for sale.
It is very beautiful and interesting. The interior is impressive. Especially the view of the city from the bell tower is a very beautiful city. I want to warn future visitors of the bell tower-climbing the bell towers is quite difficult
The Pearl of the Deep. When we stopped by for the first time, the cathedral made a strong impression (no worse than Nesvizh). It is a pity that there is no trail park for 2 kilometers to walk with children. Maybe they just didn 't see it?
It is important to find a guide among the abbots, the phone will be given in the shop. With it, you will go to many places, such as basements and a bell tower... just an enthusiastic person
My soul is calm in it, I'm drawn there. The only thing can be written in vain on the columns of the type of curses for those who talk in the temple, smart and so observes, and ... I don't care, but when you read it you feel negative (put it very mildly)

We went down to the longest dungeon in Belarus with a guide. He interested the child with his tales about the dungeon. Upstairs in the bell tower, he allowed the bells to ring. The view of Glubokoe is very beautiful.
One of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in my opinion! It is located in the very center of the city and is visible from anywhere in the cozy city of Glubokoe
It was 08/14/2021
We received a storm of emotions and a lot of impressions. We had a wonderful and informative time.
I strongly recommend arranging an excursion with Yuri. We didn't regret anything. See a couple of attached photos below. I didn't post everything on purpose, because it's better to see everything for yourself
A beautiful cathedral, re-illuminated from a Catholic church. In the cathedral there is an icon of the Mother of God "worthy to eat", brought from Mount Athos.
It is recommended to visit! A typical example of the Vilna Baroque on the territory of Belarus. In the temple, ask Yuri Petrovich, you can only climb the bell tower with him.
A beautiful ancient temple. With its own history and secret passages. The place is salted. It feels extraordinary to be in church at a service. The icons are ancient, the walls are centuries-old, the floor is made of stone slabs - all this gives the temple splendor and pomp. The choir is wonderful.
An ancient temple, a sacred place. Dungeons arouse fear and interest at the same time. This place leaves no one indifferent - neither a Christian believer nor a simple tourist. A magnificent temple.
