This is the best place on earth! The old Austrian road is a story, dangerous adventures, fabulous nature. I recommend it to anyone who likes car tours and who likes hiking trails. I dream of returning and walking this way. You will enjoy climbing mountains to a height of two kilometers, observation decks, crossings over a violent river; meeting other tourists (learn English to share your impressions with guests from other countries).
It's just an unreal sight. An unforgettable journey through East Kazakhstan Region that has long been wanted to be carried out and now it has happened. The condition of the coating is tin. They said that all-wheel drive was required, and it's true, but still I poked my nose into a regular VESTA CROSS, she could.
2023 On June 28, in the morning we left for Staro-Austrika in a land cruiser 100 and 200. There were 2 avalanches at 40-60 km. 1 can be bypassed, but 2 is already dangerous. If you drive through it, you can fall through or stand on your side. And it's also dangerous to go around, there are big boulders in the river, you can just get up. Large fir trees fell for 30-40 km, we removed them and I think it will be possible to drive in August - October.
60km of the road, which we covered for almost 6 hours. We drove two cars in a Mitsubishi Pajero 4 (3.0L) & Nissan X-trail (2.5L)
The Council:
1. do not drive after a heavy downpour or during, because there are areas where there is a lot of dirt, and if the car is loaded and not prepared, then you will have a hard time. Passengers got out in such places)))
2. Drive so that the drivers are rested, because passing this road takes a lot of effort and you need to be focused.
3. It is also necessary to remember that gasoline consumption here is doubled.
Is it worth going? Definitely yes! Beautiful landscapes and an unforgettable experience for drivers are waiting for you.
The Austrian Road is one of the most picturesque and mysterious mountain roads in Kazakhstan. It was built without the use of machinery - by manual labor back in 1914-16 by Austrian and Czech prisoners of war of the First World War to strengthen the border with China. Now it has been restored and connects the Katon-Karagai National Park and the Markakolsky Nature Reserve. With a length of almost 150 kilometers, it starts from the village of Shyngystai and leads along a winding serpentine up to the Burkhat pass (2098 m), which offers an amazing view of Mount Belukha, the Katunsky ridge and the valley of the Bukhtarma River, then we cross more than 16 bridges through the crystal-clear Kara-Kaba River, and descend to the lake Markakol, Marble pass, in the steppe (desert-steppe) part of the region in the village of Terekty. This road impresses the imagination with spectacular landscapes, crossings, turns, as well as as a monument to history, amazing legends and heroic labor.
