Advantages-price / quality in the lowest price category for housing in Palolem according to the offered tourist tours! Really evaluate the Indian conditions, do not raise the bar from expectations and your vacation will be wonderful!!! Good-natured hosts Debbie and Greg, who guard your peace at the reception 24 hours a day. Gregi can exchange currency at the normal exchange rate. Everything is covered in palm trees! The distance to the beach is a three-minute walk through a palm grove. There is a shared kitchen in the courtyard. The water was always hot, and electricity was sometimes turned off throughout the village. Each room has a balcony. There are rooms with air conditioning and just a fan. In India, it is not hot at night, as in Thailand or Zanzibar, so you can do without air conditioning (preferably then take a room on the ground floor with Windows not facing the courtyard). TV with Indian channels, kettle, Wi-Fi is normal. The territory is cleaned, the gates are closed for the night, a large empty Parking lot. Cleaning on request! There is a famous place with "eagles" and a shark rock nearby.
Cons-once again, do not expect Turkish conditions from a guest house in India and you will be happy!
A wonderful hotel for its stardom
I was vacationing alone on Palolem Beach at the Wavelet Beach Resort hotel in December 2023. It's my first time in India.
When choosing a hotel, I was guided by reviews and a low price.
All my expectations were fully met. The positive reviews of tourists correspond to reality. Everything is very good for its stardom.
I took a room without air conditioning, with a fan. But even it was rarely turned on, because the temperature was a comfortable 24-32 degrees.
The room was on the 1st floor on the north side. Maybe it's for the best, because it's a little hot on the south side during the day. I saw that some people slept with the balcony doors open at night, but I didn't take any chances, because I wasn't sure that someone wouldn't crawl into my room or run in. There are very few midges and mosquitoes, there were no bites. I heard the conversations of the vacationers of the neighboring hotel that monkeys jump on the roofs at night, but I did not see them.
I will not repeat the advantages of the hotel from other reviews. I will write about what others have not written about.
Positive:
1. Very clean in the room, normal clean plumbing, washed tiles. The entrance to the hotel is barefoot. Shoes are left at the entrance.
2. There are no unpleasant odors of mold or dampness. A fragrant sachet with a pleasant aroma is fixed on the wall and it is very pleasant to enter the room after the street.
3. Ironed bed linen. Two large towels (probably for two, but I lived alone). The linen was changed only once, even if I left the keys at the reception. On the 3rd day, I left the hotel in Puttaparthi and returned a week later for clean linen. Therefore, a rare change of underwear did not upset me.
4. Very convenient location. If you follow the path to the right at the exit of the hotel, the beach is no more than 200 meters away. All shops, shops, cafes, massage parlors are within walking distance.
5. On Palolem beach, the wave is not very high, the entrance to the water is gentle. Clean sand on the shore and in the water: no debris, shells, corals, algae. The water temperature is super comfortable. I don't know how many degrees it is, but when you come in, you feel a pleasant freshness. I stayed in the water for 1.5-2 hours, hanging in the weightlessness of salt water like a hippo. But the water is not very clear, and the sand is gray, not as beautiful as they say in some descriptions of the beach.
6. To my surprise, despite the large number of stray cows and dogs, everything is very clean on the beach, there are garbage cans. Every day I watched how the sand was swept and garbage collected at each neck.
7. There are a lot of sun beds with umbrellas, which can be occupied at least for the whole day, taking a drink or food in an adjacent cafe. There were very few people on the beach, and companies of Indians appeared on weekends.
8. It is safe at the hotel. Everything is under video surveillance. At night, the friendly Sagin sleeps like a faithful watchdog on the sofa at the entrance to the hotel.
9. And the most important plus of the hotel is the owners Debi and Gregi. Always with a smile, ready to help, be sure to ask: "Is everything okay?"
When I left for Puttoparti, I asked Debi to take a sheet with me to make up the shelf in the slipperbase and the bed in the ashram. So she gave me a complete set with a pillowcase.
The TV was not working, I asked to set it up. They immediately tried to connect it, but without success, they replaced it with another one. Although I turned it on only 2 times, but the efficiency was pleasant.
There were small disadvantages that did not spoil the rest a bit. I'll just list them so that the next tourists will take them into account.
1. Almost every day, the lights were usually turned off for a short time during the day. I think that the backup generator was turned on at the same time.
2. There are only 2 small pieces of soap in the bathroom. There is no toilet paper, but there is a shower for washing next to the toilet. You can buy paper, wet wipes, shampoo at local shops or take it with you.
3. The room was also cleaned only once during my departure to Puttoparti. When the trash can with leftover fruits and other things remained full in my room for 2 days, no boogers ran up. When I left the room in the morning, I began to put the basket out the door, and thus solved the problem.
4. If you are a light sleeper, then be sure to take earplugs, otherwise you will not get enough sleep, because crows are screaming all night, dogs are barking and biting (although they are absolutely harmless during the day), roosters are crowing early and birds are chirping loudly. This noise is inevitable, they all live there.
5. There is not enough table and chair in the room. It is not convenient to keep any small things on the refrigerator. There are dishes there anyway. I brought a table and an armchair from the balcony into the room.
6. There is no safe in the room. If you are worried about the safety of documents and money, put them in the closet. Bring a padlock with you and use it to close the closet, which has a bolt with hinges for the lock.
7. There are no large supermarkets with fixed prices and no market in Palolem. But everything can be found in a variety of small shops. There are supermarkets in Margao and Canacon, which can be reached inexpensively by bus or rickshaw.
On Palolem, the best exchange rate was at a travel agency, if you walk from the hotel, on the right along the main street - 85 rupees per dollar. They can give lower, but knowing the rate, you can bargain. In Puttaparthi, I changed 87. It was a low 83 at the airport.
I didn't take a SIM card at the airport. On Palolem, they sell Airtel 5G SIM cards in a shop near the Dental clinic on the left along the main road. The original passport is needed, they did not issue a copy at first. We also need to bargain. At first, 1,100 rupees were requested, after the auction they were reduced to 790. When I said that I would come with my passport tomorrow, they offered to immediately sell the SIM card on the condition that I would bring my passport tomorrow. I didn't agree. I bought a SIM card in Puttoparty for 500 rupees with a tariff for 28 days with 2.5 GB of Internet daily and free calls throughout India. She worked perfectly in all the states of India where I have been.
I was satisfied with the rest. Two weeks flew by like two days. I got a lot of impressions, a lot of new information. Despite some anti-sanitation on the streets and other disadvantages for a European, I realized that I wanted to come back again.
