The former terrible Turkish prison Lefkos Pyrgos or the White Tower with a height of 27 meters is a symbol of Thessaloniki, the brightest monument of ancient architecture. At one time it was called the bloody tower. Along the seaside Zoo Park, where this tower is located, there is a dividing line between the old part of the city and the new quarters. It was built by the Turks on the orders of Sultan Mahmud II in 1430 for the defense of Fort Kalamaria, as a defensive structure: it was part of the city wall and covered the eastern part of Thessaloniki. It is assumed that the famous Ottoman architect Sinan designed it. Historians believe that it was built on the site of an ancient Byzantine fortress. For a long time it was used as a barracks, then as a prison. After the demolition of the lower fort and the city walls, it was painted white. Over time, it became similar to the color of ivory. The massacre of prisoners staged in 1826 turned the White Tower into a red one: because of the blood spilled. In 1912, it was whitewashed again, as if symbolically ridding it of its bloody past. Then the White Tower was transferred to the Byzantine Museum. Amazing collections of sculptures, fragments of mosaic floors and walls, frescoes and icons, coins and ceramic products – these are the components of the museum's exposition.
Cool place. It's good to walk in the evening. The White Tower is considered the center of the city. Near the marina, the embankment, there is an opportunity to go boating and drink wine. The prices are very reasonable.
One of the few places in the city where you can walk and see the sights and the sea , it was very warm in the afternoon at the end of June +45🥵
You won 't take much of a walk 😄
I have long wanted to get to the observation deck of the Belui Tower. Yes, the view of the sea, the city is good, and the exposition inside the tower is not very good, for a C, there is an audio guide in Russian.
The White Tower is the symbol of Thessaloniki. There is a very good museum where you can listen to the history of Thessaloniki. And you can also take a bus ride around the city and also listen to the history of the city!
Towering on the promenade of Thessaloniki, on the Aegean coast, with its own dramatic history, the White Tower has become a symbol of this city. The museum of the White Tower houses works of art by masters of the Middle Ages, fragments of interior decoration, sculptures, coins. To put your palms on the rough walls of this magnificent structure means to touch the history of this glorious Greek people!
The symbol of the city. One of its main attractions, located on the shore of the bay.
It was built in the XV century by the Ottomans.
It is both an architectural monument and a museum. There is an observation deck at the top.
The preserved tower of the city fortress wall. In reality, it surprises with its size. Inside there is a small museum with paintings and photographs of the city. From the roof there is a panoramic view in all directions, for the best pictures to remember
It is a beautiful historical place, although I have not been to the tower itself. A very beautiful embankment, on it (not far from the White Tower) is a monument to Alexander the Great.
I 'm sorry , I haven 't been , I just wanted to ask a question . The question is this. What is the safety of the tower and what is its history?
An interactive museum , you say ? It's very interesting, I love this! And why , by the way , for an hour and a half ?
Excellent view of Thessaloniki from the top of the tower! An interactive museum with a story about the history of Thessaloniki. Count on an hour and a half.
