We really liked the hotel from its location to the area in which it is located- Bentota. The large well-groomed territory of the hotel allows you to feel comfortable at any time of the day. The railway that crosses the path to the beach does not interfere at all, but on the contrary adds color, does not interfere with sleep. The hotel has 25 rooms, huge rooms (everything you need to relax is there). Each room has its own large balcony with comfortable seating. We were lucky we had an ocean view. The pool is not large, but since there are not many people, we almost always swam alone, it works until 20:30, you can do it later, no one forbade. The breakfasts are very tasty (fruits, fresh, omelette, bacon, cheese, jam, toast, separately I would like to note that the coffee is very tasty) and hearty, which allowed us to relax quietly before dinner, at lunch we usually drank coffee or tea on the balcony with cookies or buns (we bought everything at the Fud city supermarket). We went out to the city for dinner, visited the Wave Indian restaurant several times (there is wi-fi), had dinner at our hotel a couple of times, once a pizzeria at the neighboring Amal hotel (wi-fi), and generally most often went to the restaurant opposite the hotel (ideally suited according to price / quality criteria). Wi-fi in the hotel works well only in the reception area and by the pool, or on the balconies, alas, it does not pull in the rooms, but it did not upset us at all, we rested from the outside world. We lived on the third floor, communicated with all the neighbors 4 rooms on the floor (Samara, St. Petersburg, we, Altai, Tyumen) all the guys were very kind and friendly, shared their impressions of the places where who, what, in general, there was a friendly company. We visited two excursions from the tour operator (The last kingdom of Kandy, and the city of Fort Galle, we ourselves went to Hikkaduwa by train to the beach with turtles), walked a lot along Bentota. I would like to separately note our beach, how wonderful it is when there are no people, no one walks, offers nothing, shouts, silence and relaxation, there are sun beds, a mattress and towels will be prepared by the beach staff (a couple of people are always on site) . And so, summing up, we were satisfied with the rest, we liked everything, especially the area, calm and everything is within walking distance. A stunning island surrounded by greenery and flowers, the animal world was also pleased. Monitor lizards were often met at the hotel there lived a monkey, flying foxes, and of course peacocks. I definitely recommend it as the best option in Bentota for a relaxing holiday.
I'll start with the location of the hotel: a very quiet, peaceful area with a wide beach. Ideal for relaxation. The waves are present, but not strong. The city is 4-5 minutes away by tuktuk. Surf school is located to the right of the hotel along the beach.
Initially, the railway was confusing, but in the end it did not spoil our rest at all.
The hotel itself is a little old, with traces of mold, scuffs, and dampness in some places. The territory is well maintained, green, bigger than it looks in the photo. There is no turtle farm now. There was an aquarium with fish and a beautiful park area.
I met the owner of the hotel, he said that there were few visitors during the covid era and now the hotel is just beginning to gain momentum. I must say, all the locals know this place, because there is a great restaurant with the same name, wunderbar.
We lived in a standard room - a large room, a chic terrace, mattresses are not sagging, but rather harsh (if you like to sleep softly, it will be hard), the air conditioner works perfectly, there is a fan, a safe, a tea set and they replenish it with water daily. Towels are a little old, have a gray tint, and come with holes, as well as bed linen, I hope the owner will update them soon, for many tourists this is important.
There is a large, clean swimming pool on site, with sun loungers around it.
The breakfasts are monotonous: fried eggs or scrambled eggs or scrambled eggs, sausages or bacon, a plate of fruit, bread, cheese, butter, jam, tea or coffee. But I really liked the daily freshly squeezed juice - it's always different: a mix, watermelon, orange, mango, and so on.
The waiters are almost all souls, it's nice to chat. Anyway, the main advantage of this hotel is the staff. They are very responsive, they try to please as quickly as possible at the first request. You feel welcome.
I'll write about the disadvantages as well. :
Wildlife in a Sri hotel is the norm, I understand: lizards, flying dogs, and sometimes monkeys are all good and understandable. But huge cockroaches are difficult for a European tourist to understand. It's good that I'm not afraid of them, but my friends categorically refused to enter the room.
The room was treated, everything was sprayed around, but as soon as it started to rain, the cockroaches crawled out and roamed peacefully on the walls of the hotel, then scattering to wherever. It was an unpleasant sight. But there were no spiders at all.
Tuktuks are always on the territory, they will be delivered and brought back to any point in the city.
In general, I recommend the hotel with the hope that it will receive another star in the near future - it can rightfully be a four.
The Wunderbar hotel has become my fourth hotel in Sri Lanka and the best! Very friendly staff, excellent service, the hotel is located as if in a garden. Cozy, homely atmosphere, clean pool, delicious food for breakfast and dinner! A wide beach with sun beds, mattresses, umbrellas, and a new beach towel is provided every day. Good location in relation to the center of Bentota. The hotel you want to return to.
