In Hercegnov Bay, on a small stone island a few hundred meters from the Arza fortress and the famous beaches of the Lustica peninsula, there is a small medieval monastery of Zhanitsa, dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We couldn't help but visit this place, which conceals so many mysteries and graces. The monastery of Janice (also known as Mala Gospa), based on a reef island. Folk legend says that once, during a severe storm, local fishermen and monks from Greece hid from the weather behind Cape Arza. While there, they saw an icon descending from the sky to the island, and heard an angelic voice telling them that this place was sacred, it was filled with kindness and brotherly love, and the Mother of God herself would visit it three times, and the last time it would happen during the Apocalypse. After that, the Greek monks wanted to stay forever on the island of Janice and built their cells there.
However, there is a more realistic version claiming that the icon came to the island in the Middle Ages - the Montenegrins hid it here from the Turkish conquerors. Soon it was decided to erect a small church and leave the precious relic on Zhanitsa.
The Sretensky Church was built on the island of Zhanitsa in the XII century. Later, it was surrounded by a high stone wall, and other monastic buildings were located in the eastern part of the island. According to the documents of the XV century found in the Savina monastery, the island monastery was considered a courtyard of the Hercegnovsky monastery.
After a long period of desolation, the monastery of Zhanitsa was restored and re-consecrated in 1880.
Already in our century, the monastery was restored again in 2001, and today this small monastery belongs to the Montenegrin-Primorye Metropolia of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
We advise tourists who come to Montenegro for the first time or again to visit this picturesque place. I am sure that you will fall in love with this amazing and elegant country that will not let you go!
