Hello! We were very pleasantly surprised, the interior was very beautiful, thought out to the smallest detail, everything was clean and tidy! The staff is in place, responsive and positive, and we received a lot of positive emotions!
Thank you for preserving history from antiquity to the present day!
Let's get back to you again!)
The museum is magnificent, and Nara's guide is simply beyond praise. It was the best tour I've ever been on. Such caring staff, wonderful exhibits, answers to all questions. If you are in Sukhumi, visiting this museum is just a must have!
The museum was founded in 1915. It has departments for nature, archaeology, the history of the ancient and Middle Ages, ethnography, and the history of the modern period. There are many interesting and unique exhibits here.
A great place to explore the culture and history of the country. The museum's expositions will tell about the flora and fauna, ancient traditions of the deep, new history of Abkhazia. You will be able to get acquainted with the customs of the people. Entrance is paid, 200 rubles. We were lucky to get on the tour. The guide is Glad, this is a person who really loves his job. Her stories about everyday life and traditions of Abkhazia help tourists to learn a lot of interesting things.
We were at the museum on 11/28/2024. I recommend it, even if you came to Sukhumi for half a day, like us. BUT we must take into account that the lights are turned off at certain hours - as it happened in our country (we did not know) We didn't even have an hour to explore the museum! Unfortunately, there is not always a guide in winter. I would have a few questions for him. For example, there is no information about serious events around 1978-79. But this did not spoil the impression of the museum, cultural services, exhibitions and the interior / exterior decoration of the building. The ticket price is much more affordable than to an unkempt botanical garden. There are no discounts for pensioners anywhere - this is a minus
A good place to get acquainted with the nature of Abkhazia, with minerals, the history of the country, the painful independence, you can read and see a lot. The museum is five, the staff is two! The keeper of the halls followed us, turned off the lights in the past halls, mumbled to herself how she hates the second floor, moreover, almost an hour before closing, like we prevented her from leaving earlier, you can't treat visitors like that! And, reading the reviews, I agree, many of the exhibits are not signed.
I like to visit local history museums, to learn more about the area. The museum is not big, everything is in Russian. They did not take a guide, and they did not offer it to us. We just ran through the 2nd floor. The Abkhazians were interested and liked the stuffed animals and birds. Admission is 200 rubles per person.
We visited the museum today. And not for the first time. I really liked the wonderful girl, the guide tells me very interesting things. He answers the questions in a very detailed way. The tour, which usually takes 1 hour, took us two and a half hours. I wanted to listen and listen to this girl. I didn't remember the guide's name. It is strictly and obligatory to visit this place.
The museum is magnificent, I recommend everyone to visit. There is ancient and medieval archaeology, materials on modern and modern history. There are even well-preserved black-figure ceramics.
A positive point. There is a museum. It just exists and you can go to it to pass the time. There's nothing else to do there.
The negative point. The museum refused to give us a tour because there were only 2 of us. It was morning, 10 o'clock, we were walking and came to find out about Abkhazia. But no. They said wait, maybe some day a group will come by today, so that 10 people at least and then we are ready to work. Or were we just denied a tour?
And of course, the finale of everything was that it turns out that Russia prevents Abkhazia from living. I was told at school that Russia saved Georgia and Abkhazia from extermination. And in the museum, the information on the stand shows that the opposite is true. I quote from the stand: "... Since the XVI century, the three-hundred-year period of the Ottoman Empire's rule over the countries of the Black Sea region has begun. Abkhazia, after several unsuccessful battles with superior Turkish troops, finds itself vassalage to the Ottoman Empire. At the same time, however, Abkhazia maintained its statehood and full internal independence, and power was in the hands of the Chachba dynasty. This political situation continued until the middle of the XIX century, before the establishment of the rule of the Russian Empire in the Caucasus and the liquidation of the Abkhazian statehood."
Very interesting! Especially for those who want to get a general understanding of the country and its culture from the very beginning. It's more interesting with a guide, but the tour is quite fast, although it lasts about an hour. The signs on the ground floor are quite exhaustive, on the second floor I already want more explanations in some halls.
Considering the possibilities of the country, it is a minimalistic but interesting place. The museum itself is very pretty both externally and internally, and if you are lucky with a guide, you can learn a lot about the customs, culture, traditions and history of the country. Also in the museum you can meet a large number of Abkhazian intellectuals (museum workers) - who are very different from the population in other regions of the country.
A wonderful museum! The exposition is not very large, but it is full of stunning monuments of nature, history and culture of Abkhazia. Be sure to come! Everyone will find something interesting for themselves!
Museums of this type are interesting in every city. Feel free to visit if you are interested in such a topic.

It is a wonderful place to learn about Abkhazia from not the most standard sources. A nice and well-maintained museum, but don't expect interactive metropolitan stuff. And the attention of the guides. They are simply not there. I went in, bought a ticket and walk freely, watch and read. And if you also got in on Saturday afternoon, then they can let you in first, and then after half an hour suddenly announce that it's a shortened day and everyone needs to leave early. Therefore, take a quick look and goodbye.
A great museum. You can get acquainted with the flora and fauna of Abkhazia from different periods, as well as the history of the development of the state, starting with the ancient tribes. In general, it is very interesting and informative.
The expositions are located on two floors, rather large halls. It was interesting to read the story. There are halls with military themes. Unfortunately, it was not possible to take a guided tour - it would have been more interesting. I recommend visiting
An interesting tour, the girl guide told me emotionally, vividly. It was interesting to listen.
There are halls of local lore; halls of antiquity, the hall of everyday life of the Abkhazians; the hall of history and the hall of military glory.
A wonderful museum, a lot of exhibits, we went there on an excursion, the museum guide, a young girl named Rada, was very impressed, she told us so interestingly about the museum's exhibits, about the history of Abkhazia, traditions, answered all questions.Without her, the tour would not be so interesting, it is 100%.
Everything is very decent, very responsible staff, a lot of interesting information about the country and the events of 30 years ago, patriots of their country work.
If you want to know the history of Abkhazia, go here. The museum is not crowded. The exposition is full-fledged and tells a very good story about this small country.
The museum is nice, but the staff is terrible. During the tour, the caretakers talked to each other in full voice, which is why the guide could not be heard.
The second floor was just briefly passed, except for the hall with the last war. But they stayed for a very long time on the photo of the mercenary Basayev, which is missing....
I recommend you to visit. A very cool museum with three floors. It's just a pity that employees are not interested in working properly. They barely asked for a museum guide. We stood and recruited 10 people - they refused to conduct it in another way.
I would like to leave a good review and visit the museum, but, unfortunately, the staff of the ticket office does not work on schedule until 17:00 and at 16:57 they already close the ticket office with the words - do not argue and leave, the ticket office is closed. We were passing through, we didn't have time before. And the museum itself is open until 18:00.
The impressions of the museum are twofold, on the one hand, the exhibits themselves are not bad, but here is the presentation... Many are not signed, it is difficult to understand where they are. The museum staff is not interested, they do not conduct excursions, there are practically none in the halls. It seems that they are not interested in the museum. There is something to compare it with, there were in the museums of Kazan and Samara, heaven and earth.
According to the expositions, the museum is quite rich, I liked the sarcophagus similar to the Egyptian one, the marble slab with a plot pattern of Greek execution, in general, the Mediterranean exhibits are interesting. There are halls about the recent war, and this, of course, is difficult, but it is impossible to tear yourself away and not look - they are decorated with soul and as informative as possible.
The caretakers, who usually monitor the silence, gather in groups and talk continuously. It was in all the museums of Abkhazia, it is apparently an ineradicable tradition. I even got used to it already, but in the military hall.. These gossip-style conversations were very stressful.. They themselves seem to be calling for disrespect, such ticks, they would have moved to another hall, with canned fish or something... By the way, the fish collection is interesting, I haven't seen it anywhere else)
The museum is worth a visit))
A good museum with a set of exhibits from the antiquity of human life to modern years, the history of the last 30 years. Exhibits of flora and fauna, life of Abkhazians are presented.
The polite staff will tell you where to start if you are not with a group of excursions.

A good museum and almost the only restored building in Sukhum (there is a sign outside that the restoration was carried out at the expense of the Russian Federation).
We went with a guide. According to their rules, a group of 10 people should gather, then the guide serves the group for free. There were 6 of us, we chipped in and bought 4 more tickets to take a guide.
Exhibits are presented on the history of those places from the oldest fossils, amonites to the materials of the 2008 war. Moreover, the topic of war is still very painful for Abkhazians and the guide talked about it for quite a long time.
We also learned about ancient settlements, costumes, and the Greek colonization of these lands.
There is an authentic dolmen in the courtyard of the museum.
Informative. We were without a guide, but it will probably be more informative with him, since there were questions during the inspection. Although they asked the employees questions at the exit, they received answers
The exposition of the 1992 war opens your eyes to many moments.
Thank you.

A wonderful museum with interesting exhibits. Nearby is the Sukhumi botanical garden. Tickets to the museum are not expensive. It's worth a visit.
The museum is poor, there are few exhibits, to be honest. But everything is compensated by the energy of the guides! We came across a young girl, unfortunately I don't remember her name. How she tries to tell us everything and show us if possible! What pride was evident in her words when she described the customs and traditions of the Abkhazians to us!And when we went to the hall dedicated to the war with Georgia, we had tears in our eyes from her stories, not from pity, from empathy! I wanted to pick up a machine gun and go into battle! A very talented girl guide! We all really liked it!
It's a cool museum, my 7-year-old daughter really liked it, especially animals and birds. And the price is inexpensive. The air conditioner works, you can hide well from the heat.
I really liked it! I recommend it for visiting with children! And as there are quite a lot of women's jewelry in good condition , you can consider . Everyday life is well represented.
The Abkhazian State Museum is a historical museum in Sukhumi. The museum has two branches - in Gulripsh and Gudauta districts of Abkhazia. Over the long history of the museum's existence, he managed to collect a huge number of museum valuables. More than 100 thousand items are stored in its storerooms - these are unique things made of ceramics, metal, fabrics, written documents, etc. The museum's funds contain historical and cultural monuments not only of the Abkhazian people, but also of other peoples of the Caucasus, ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Byzantium, Sasanian Iran, materials telling about the participation of the Abkhazian the people in the Great Patriotic War. A large collection of data is stored in this museum. A very interesting tour.
It's a good museum. During our visit, there was an excursion with schoolchildren, the guide was a young girl, she talked very interestingly about Abkhazia. We were allowed to join the group.
A good interesting museum, but when we were refused an excursion, even when we agreed to buy 10 tickets, it was very insulting. Probably, it is necessary to agree in advance, but it is still very unpleasant

A must-visit place on trips to Abkhazia.
It is interesting to wander both "sitting down" to a group with a guide, and alone, slowly looking at the exhibits.
The museum is not interested in tourists. It is officially open until 18:00, at 16:48 the staff stood at the exit door and refused to sell tickets. They told me to come tomorrow, it's clear that I want to go home early…
An excellent museum of local lore, two floors, about ten halls, spectacularly decorated exhibits, a lot of interesting things. And a pleasant coolness :)

The museum is open until 18.00, but at 16.30 we were politely refused entry because it turns out that the team has its own rules and its own schedule, the work is difficult, it's not like climbing into mines for coal. I found out after the fact that the portrait of the murderer of women and children Basayev hung there or continues to hang, if I had known earlier, I would not have gone. So thanks for leaving early, my money didn't go to fans of such characters....
A good exposition on the history of Abkhazia from ancient times to the present day, you can get a general impression, but nowadays we would like more interactive. The pleasure is inexpensive - 200 rubles per person. And at 16 o'clock there are free excursions, provided that a group of interested tourists from 10+ people gathers, but the guide talks monotonously and boringly - listing essentially what is written on the posters.

It is interesting and informative. It is a pity that the staff is not eager to conduct excursions. They said at the entrance that there was no tour. At the exit, they said that excursions from 10 people. At the same time, about 15 people bought tickets in 5 minutes. And there were even more in museums. The museum itself is cool
Special thanks to the staff and researchers of the museum!!! Professionals with inexhaustible knowledge and amazing people who are ready to help and give information. I will never forget such a warm welcome!!!!!

The museum is interesting. It's a pity, we were brought on a bus tour to the fullest. The guide ran with us through the halls, almost at a gallop. I was also surprised that people go to the museum in flip-flops and shorts. This is not a c0rtir! You should try to enter the Hermitage like that! So, everything is fine, but our tourist always manages to mess everything up.
It's a good museum. Even the children found interesting exhibits for themselves. Excursions are conducted by 10 people or more. We were lucky and we got there. It was interesting!
