I express my gratitude to the organizers and keepers of the Brest Fortress. We were part of the tour group in October 2024. Our guide was a junior researcher Margarita Gennadievna. She introduced us to the exposition of 10 halls of the Brest Fortress Defense Museum and the memorial complex. A professional account of events and monuments about them leaves a strong impression. Thank you for your expert approach, friendliness, love for your business and visitors.
Many thanks for the fascinating tour conducted today by Inna Vladimirovna Gavrilenko Memorial Complex employee, a true specialist in her field, who left the best impressions, taking us with her fascinating stories about each of the Brest Fortress expositions.
Thank you for your very important and valuable work on preserving the memory of the most important milestones in the history of the Belarusian people, preserving and passing on from generation to generation the memory of the exploits of the heroes and defenders of the Brest fortress!!!
The place is stunning in its scale and serves as a reminder of the heroic feat of our ancestors who gave their lives for our freedom. The architectural ensemble of the fortress made a great impression.
The entrance to the territory is free, anyone can get in.
On the territory of the complex there are:
-monument of Courage
- Eternal Flame
-Ceremonial Square and mass grave;
-An obelisk bayonet
-Sculpture "Thirst"
In hot weather, I recommend to stock up on water and panama hats.
We went on 2 excursions with young, but very wonderful guides. First, we visited the art museum with the guide Anna. Calmly, interestingly, accessible to children and adults, she told us about the emergence of the city of Brest, and then about the artists. Then we got to another wonderful guide Vyacheslav. He spoke about the war in a very informative and accessible way. In general, we are very happy that we visited this place. I recommend
We visited the Brest Fortress memorial complex for the first time. It's like seeing your family, what has always been with you. Deep impressions. We entered through the Zvezda entrance, where visitors are greeted by music and a view of the main monument to the defenders. Low bow and eternal memory to the Heroes.
Thanks to the leadership of the state of Belarus and the employees of the complex for preserving the memory and fostering respect for the feat of the fallen. There is a youth memorial post N1 inside the fortress. Schoolchildren take up the guard of honor at the eternal flame. This is very important for the future life of the entire next generation.
We chose an individual tour of the territory and the interactive museum of War and Peace, and went through the classical museum of the fortress ourselves. And they were not mistaken. Probably, all the guides here are dedicated professionals. We had Alexandra, young, knowledgeable, sincere. She told me, sometimes touching me to tears. How the commanders sent their wives and children with a white flag so that they would not have to shoot at them themselves, and asked: just live.
It cannot leave anyone indifferent, as both scouts and ordinary residents of the fortress wrote in reports that there would be a war. But she came suddenly.
There is a lot of important information. But two academic hours are enough for careful perception. Then we walked by ourselves. It is very beautiful around the fortress, we advise you to go around outside. Then we went to the second museum, we were tired. We ate at a cafe in the parking lot. Delicious pancakes with potatoes and coffee. It is more convenient to get from the station by taxi, 200 rubles Russian. Museum tickets are valid multiple times, for two more months. We recommend visiting at any age.
Monumental! We visited the Brest Fortress Defense Museum and Fort No. 5. We also tried to enter the Eastern Fort, but preparations were underway for the filming of the film and we were very quickly discovered and politely escorted out)))
Words cannot describe the impression - I think everyone who was born in the USSR, the CIS and Russia should visit here to understand at WHAT cost we are now living without bombing and shelling.
The place is mandatory for everyone, starting from school age. We took an excursion, inexpensive. The young guide competently and informatively told about the history of the fortress, the museum got acquainted with the exhibits, things from the time of the Second World War. Of course, emotions are captured in this place! Low bow and gratitude to those who participated in the defense of the Brest fortress.

The Brest fortress was built in the 30s – early 40s of the XIX century at the intersection of the Western Bug and Mukhavets rivers on the site of old Brest. During the construction, the entire city was moved to a new territory east of the citadel.
The fortress was located on 4 islands formed by the arms of the Mukhavets and Western Bug rivers and a system of canals.
In the center of the fortress there is a Citadel, or Central fortification, which is connected by bridges to 3 artificial island fortifications. This:
Kobrin fortification (northeast side)
Terespol fortification (west side)
Volyn fortification (southeast island)
The Nicholas Churcharchitectural center of the Citadel is the garrison Nicholas Church, built in 1851-76.
The total area of the fortress is about 4 square kilometers.
From August 1915 until the end of the First World War, the Brest fortress was occupied by German troops. In 1921, under the terms of the Riga Peace Treaty, it was transferred to Poland, which it was part of until 1939.
In 1939, the Brest Fortress was transferred to the Soviet Union.
Brest fortress during the Great Patriotic War on June 22, 1941, the garrison of the fortress took the first blows of the Nazi invaders and held the defense in complete encirclement for more than a month. In the post-war period, for the courage and heroism shown by the defenders of the fortress during its defense, the citadel received the honorary title of "Hero Fortress".
For the people of Belarus, the Brest Fortress is an outstanding symbol of resistance during the Great Patriotic War.
Brest Fortress today
The Brest Fortress Memorial Complex is one of those places that should be visited in Belarus, and the largest tourist attraction in the city of Brest.
After the war, the fortress was not fully restored. A memorial complex was created on its territory in 1969-71 to perpetuate the feat of the defenders.
The architectural and sculptural ensemble of the memorial includes the main monument "Courage", the bayonet obelisk, the sculptural composition "Thirst", the Ceremonial square, 3 rows of memorial slabs with the graves of the dead, ruins and surviving structures of the fortress, the museum.
The main entrance of the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex begins with a monumental main entrance in the form of a huge star cut into a concrete block. A.Alexandrov's song "Holy War" and a government message about the attack on the Soviet Union by the troops of Nazi Germany are heard here.
The compositional center of the ensemble is the monument "Courage", a 33.5 m high chest sculpture of a warrior, on the reverse side of which there are relief compositions telling about individual episodes of the heroic defense of the fortress.
The 100-meter obelisk "Bayonet" is visible from anywhere in the fortress and is connected to the main monument "Courage" by 3 rows of tombstones. The names of only 216 of the 850 defenders of the fortress buried here are known.
The sculptural composition "Thirst" depicts a Soviet soldier who, leaning on an automatic rifle, is trying with his last strength to reach the river and scoop up water with a helmet. The monument is dedicated to the courage of the defenders of the fortress, who held the defense without food and drink for many days.
The main part of the memorial is the Ceremonial Square, where mass celebrations take place.
An eternal flame burns in front of the ruins of the former engineering department.
In the evening, decorative lighting is turned on on the territory of the fortress.
How to get to Brest Fortress and where to stay
An excursion to the Brest fortress and the Brest fortress is better to come on foot. It is located about a 30-minute walk from the center of Brest.
There is a bus leaving the city every hour.
You can stay in any of the many hotels in Brest.
Tourist attractions near the Brest Fortress
It will take a whole day to explore everything in the Brest Fortress. If you have time, you can also visit:
St. Simeon Cathedral in Brest
the only museum in Europe of the medieval East Slavic city of Berestye
Museum of Railway Equipment
St. Simeon Cathedral
A beautiful open-air memorial complex with museums. We took a short tour of the Brest Fortress Defense Museum and a sightseeing tour. Zakhar is an excellent guide with a competent speech, an interesting story about the defense of the fortress, who loves his job. This is the best tour guide we have met during our trip around the country. The memorial complex is in a well-maintained condition. I definitely recommend you to visit.
P.S.There is free parking.
Hero Fortress Brest
Cleanliness ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
(Everything is clean, the lawn is mowed, the trees are well-groomed, there is a sufficient amount of garbage.)
Nature ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
( Lots of greenery and trees )
Architecture ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
(Some of the fortress buildings (which were destroyed during the storming of the Brest fortress by the troops of the 3rd Reich) have been restored, and some left untouched. At the entrance, we are greeted by the monument of the star, in which a song from the time of the Second World War is playing, in the citadel there is a museum of the Brest Fortress (In the former barracks) In the center there is an "obelisk bayonet" and a sculpture "courage", ruins of the engineering department (foundation) Behind them is the garrison church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which was a club in Soviet times.
In June 2024, she visited the Brest Fortress. I went to Brest specifically to visit this place. It's hard here, it's hard, but you definitely need to come to such places. Only by preserving them can we truly appreciate what a wonderful time we live in and appreciate it, do good, take care of loved ones, do not quarrel, live in peace, and do everything for it. The fortress has an accessible transport connection to the city center, and you can walk without problems. There are enough benches on the territory, if you are tired, there is a cafe (I did not go into it). I would like to see a richer souvenir shop, maybe even a shop. I would like to see in it, in addition to souvenirs, books about Brest, about the fortress, commemorative sets of postcards. In one of the museums, it would be great to organize screenings of documentaries, and maybe even feature films.
The history of the creation of the fortress from the project under Alexander I and the construction under Nicholas I is interesting. And also of great defensive importance in several wars. Currently, both the surviving structures and the ruins of destroyed buildings can be seen on the territory of the complex. The complex is also a burial place for those who died during the defense of the fortress in the Second World War
Brest Fortress is a place of memory and one of the most impressive memorials of the Great Patriotic War.Our dream to visit here came true on May 10th. Tears in my eyes and trembling in my soul. Thank you, Svetlana, the guide, I simply, emotionally told you about the events of the war years. There is a majestic temple on the territory, the whole territory is covered with weeping willows. It is necessary to visit such places and honor the memory of the fallen.
The tour was taken on the Tripster website. The departure was from Minsk, the journey took about 4.5 hours in one direction by minibus. The tour of the Brest Fortress is already conducted by guides working directly in this memorial complex. The territory itself is very large: it houses the Museum of the defense of the Brest Fortress, a huge 33-meter-high sculpture of a warrior, and the Thirst sculpture. At the entrance to the memorial, Levitan's voice speaks every 30 seconds, then "Holy War" plays, then the shelling from the air. The whole atmosphere evokes very strong emotions, besides, the guide tells a very interesting story. Be sure to visit this place if you are in Belarus.
We visited the Brest fortress on 31. 08. The impressions are incredible. Entering the fortress, you can hear the sound of a metronome and Levitan's voice, it gives you goosebumps. Emotions overwhelm during a visit to the memorial.
Many thanks to the guide of the Anastasia Memorial for an interesting tour and a reverent attitude to the memory and events of the past.
A must-visit place. It makes an indelible impression. Very powerful. A huge territory. Monumental sculptures. It's even difficult to describe - you just need to visit and see with your own eyes!
We came to Belarus for the first time. First of all, we decided to visit the Brest fortress. The impressions are simply amazing, the emotions are on top. There were a lot of people, but we managed to go everywhere. All tents and museums are working very quickly. The guides tell a great story, it's very interesting. One of the advantages is that with a huge number of people, we did not notice a single jar or bag of garbage. We will definitely come back soon.
The fortress is indeed a hero. It is definitely worth visiting to touch the history. The grandeur of this place is off the scale. It is also worth visiting the exhibition "Eastern Fort", which is located a little further to the left, after the entrance, from the North Gate.
The fortress is a hero! It is mandatory to visit! You need to go to such places with the whole family, drive and show the children from school, a place of glory, pride and sorrow. Memory and glory to the Soviet soldier!
You need to go to the fortress with knowledge of history - after reading books, or at least with a good guide. Externally, it's just a few buildings and remnants of fortifications. But imagine the events that took place, standing on this very piece of land. Distant and grandiose things are materializing. They can be felt, understood, approached. Something far away from books acquires the real features of great deeds.
There are good expositions in museums. The guides are very pleased. They willingly talk a lot, explain, answer questions.
This place is definitely worth a visit and you definitely need to bring children here.
Brest Fortress, the first frontier of the fortitude and courage of Soviet soldiers.People who come here know the history, remember and honor the heroes who fought to the last breath, who gave their lives with the belief that their descendants will live.
The territory of the memorial complex is relatively small. It is worth going through the whole thing, from beginning to end, to understand and recreate the picture of what is happening.
There are souvenir shops on the territory, they sell coffee, small snacks.
You can eat at the Citadel cafe, but that day it was on spec. That's why I can't say anything about him.
As a result, the fortress will remain in our memory forever 🙏🏼🕯️
A historical place with an incredible atmosphere.Very large territory , everything is well maintained , clean. There are a lot of information stands .I advise you to take an excursion (very good excursions and excellent guides ), you will not regret it .Everyone should visit here!!!
A place that must be visited!
A very well-groomed territory, a lot of information stands, military music and the sounds of airplanes make an indelible impression at the entrance through the star.
In my opinion, it is better to arrange an excursion in advance, or at least watch a documentary before visiting.
The place where the Brest Fortress is located is truly historic. Once there was an ancient city where the Volyn fortification is now located. Be sure to visit the Berestye Museum - it contains unique preserved exhibits, the remains of entire wooden streets, more than 200 houses of the 13th century at a depth of up to 7 meters. Very interesting inside.
Then, when the city was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Brest Castle was built on the site of the current fortress.
In 1833, during the reign of Nicholas I, the construction of the Brest Fortress was begun, after the completion of which it was believed that with a fortified garrison it could stop an entire army, so perfect was this building.
Today, on the territory of the fortress, the heroism of the soldiers who defended it in 1941 is emphasized in everything. The museum has many photographs, letters and personal belongings found during the restoration. Part of the walls are specially preserved in the form in which they survived. Everywhere on the territory there are information stands with descriptions of the atrocities committed by the fascists. The monuments are very soulfully executed.
1. If you want to lay flowers, then bring them with you. They don't sell on the spot!
2. Fortress Defense Museum - don't waste your time. The only exhibit worthy of attention is a part of the wall with famous words. Everything else is a copy or just a photo. And boorish staff.
3. Everything else is worth a look - the territory is fascinating. Solemn silence. Everything is strict and respectful. Be sure to walk around the fortress. There are many "islands" there, and there is something to see on each one.
A memorable place that we remember from the pages of books, from television broadcasts, since childhood.
And to be in Belarus and not get here, we could not allow that. Let's take the night train, but it was worth it!
A place where time has stopped and only quiet music and Levitan's voice remind us of the importance of the place for each of us. The perfect condition of the fortress is maintained, everywhere is quiet, calm...
This place will not leave anyone indifferent. ....Whenever possible, you definitely need to go there. It would be good to take the younger generation there without fail, so that their brains work in the right direction.
Brest.
Fortress.
What can I say?
There are no words on the territory of the fortress, they want to be silent, realizing what a fragile thing life is! And what a huge value !
The history of those distant days is still cold and bloody, I'm very weak, but looking at the whole memorial I can imagine those distant events.
And the queue of machine guns rings in my ears and the sounds of bombs exploding on the heads of innocent people .
Memory - to be remembered!
And of course, everyone should visit here!
When you get to this place, you immediately feel the energy of thousands of people associated with this place. Here you can just feel the full scale and horror of that big and long war with your skin.I had the same feeling on Mamayev Kurgan and at the monument to the soldier near Rzhev. These are holy places for a normal Russian person. You definitely need to visit here and feel all the pain that the war has caused our people.
One of the main symbols of Belarus. The place of heroic defense of the fortress garrison, the place where the Nazi troops received the order to retreat for the first time since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
There are wonderful museums on the territory, excellent, competent guides, exemplary cleanliness and order!

The memorial complex is very well maintained, everything is clean
We booked the tour in advance (there is a phone number on the website), we really liked the guide
We walked around the museum, the whole history of the place is laid out by periods
It is worth visiting iconic places on the territory (check with the guide at the end of the tour where it is even better to go)
A historical place imbued with a special atmosphere. The best time to visit is from April to September, a large open-air square. You can see for yourself, but with a guide you will learn a lot of touching and heroic moments. Interesting exhibits in museums. The price is not high, discounts for children and pensioners. Be sure to visit if you are in Brest
We traveled around Belarus for the May holidays. On May 03, 2024, we visited the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex. It's exciting to the point of goosebumps and a lump in my throat.I liked it very much, we took a lot of emotions with us to St. Petersburg.Pride in the Soviet people, indignation at the treachery of the invaders and misunderstanding, well, how is this possible?Special thanks to the guide Inna Vladimirovna, chance brought us together by chance that day, we were lucky...For her passion, deep knowledge and sensitive attitude to people.
On the eve of the holiday on May 9, 2023, the whole family visited the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial.
Parking near the Brest fortress is free, there are enough places.
The entrance to the complex itself is made in the shape of a star cut through a huge concrete block. already from afar it makes an unforgettable impression, and when you get closer and hear the announcer's announcement of the beginning of the war, it makes you shudder... Many pass through the gate with tears in their eyes... Honestly, but on a warm spring day I got goosebumps, my wife was crying... An incredibly strong place...
When planning to visit the Brest fortress, be sure to consider the question of the guide - without him there will be a lot of "white spots". There are two options:
1. A guide can be ordered in advance (follow the reviews) - these people know the territory of the fortress brilliantly, they will tell you more than regular guides and show you places where ordinary tourists simply do not get. However, there is one "but" - you will have to visit the museums yourself for a fee.
2. The tour can be taken in any of the 3 museums of the complex (preferably in the central one, since guides only take you to "their" museums), in this version the guide tells in detail about the exhibits of the museum halls, and at the end makes a small sightseeing tour of the territory.
We took an excursion for 3 people (2 adults + a child) in the central museum of the complex, the tour lasted 1.5 hours, the cost was 90 Belarusian rubles.
Be sure to note that for a guaranteed excursion it is necessary to arrive at the Brest fortress around 10-11 a.m. - then you can safely find a free guide. If you arrive after lunch, there may no longer be free guides.
The central place on the Citadel square is occupied by the monument "Courage" - a collective image of the defenders of the fortress. An Eternal flame burns near it and there are memorial slabs, under which the found remains of the heroes-defenders are buried - more than 1,000 people, of whom only a fifth are known by name. Some burials are dated to the 50s-60s-70s-80s-90s. And how many have not been found yet...
Next to the monument there is a hundred-meter obelisk made in the form of a four-sided bayonet of the Mosin rifle, the main weapon of the defenders of the fortress.
To the left of the monument is the white Hill gate, which still retains traces of bullets and shrapnel that hit them.
Another main monument included in the Memorial complex is the sculpture "Thirst": a collective image of defenders dying from lack of water (the Nazis blocked our fighters' access to water, all approaches to the river were shot through, people dying of thirst were forced to drink their own blood or break through to the river at the cost of their lives to get a helmet of water).
Be sure to visit the St. Nicholas garrison Church - the architecture of that time is preserved inside.
While walking around the fortress, remember that it is forbidden to walk through the ruins - there are a lot of police around, they can be fined.
The impressions of the tour are difficult to convey in words... The whole atmosphere of the Brest fortress seems to be filled with the pain of every day of the month filled with death, during which the last defenders of the Brest fortress defended themselves.
I think this place should be visited by everyone who loves their homeland, remembers and appreciates the feat of ordinary Soviet people and the history of our country.
Entrance to the territory is free; entrance to the museum buildings is paid. It is better to check the opening hours in advance. This is not a place for children's fun. There was a teenage guard at the eternal flame - impressive. There are signs that we do not climb monuments.
It's hard to find the right words, but it got to the very goosebumps. Footage from a film about the defense of the Brest fortress immediately flashed through my memory. It is such a significant and epoch-making place. Bullet marks have been preserved to this day. In short, everyone who will ever be in Belarus should definitely visit there. Cool emotions for all visitors.
It's an amazing place to visit. The most amazing and largest fortress I've ever seen. I touched the story of a heroic deed. Many thanks to the guide Oleg! It was very interesting, he showed us everything in detail and sincerely, answered all the questions. A highly qualified specialist, I really liked the tour. My husband did not want to go to Brest (we had a tour planned: Minsk-Grodno-Brest), but at the end of the trip he said that it was the best of all he saw and liked Brest the most
Every year we visit the Brest Fortress - this is a must-visit place for all generations, regardless of views and religion, as a reminder of that terrible and tragic time that should not happen again.
A place of memory. It is important for every family to come to this place to understand how terrible the war really is. The memorial complex is clean and calm.
The staff of the educational institution "Preschool Child Development Center of Polotsk" expresses its gratitude to the guide Artem Goncharov for an interesting, informative and informative tour in the museum of the "Defense of the Brest Fortress".A person loves and knows his job, lives the history of his country. He was very attentive, answered all the questions. After his tour, I want to come back here again. Many thanks to all the employees for their work.
A place with very heavy energy. When you inspect the ruins of the fortress walls, study the information on the information tables, you understand the severity of this feat of the Soviet army. We did not take the tour, the entrance to the fortress is free. The background is filled with songs of the war years, recordings of those times. This is a place of memory, a must-visit in Brest.
Such great places are absolutely necessary to visit!!! There is a museum on site. Definitely take a guide. And lay down more time for such a visit. I don't want to rush into such a tragic place. No one is forgotten and nothing is forgotten!!!
If possible, be sure to visit this place. We must know the history of our state. I am glad that there are many tourists here, and most importantly, everyone is being monitored here, everything is in excellent condition
The fortress is located away from the noise and the center, there is free Parking.
The territory of the fortress is huge, so it's better to come with a reserve of time.
There are also several roads with different entrances to the memorial. We were very limited in time and, unfortunately, we did not have time to visit the museums and explore the entire territory, and, as I said, it is quite large. For everyone who loves and knows history, it is a must-visit.
An amazing place to visit at any age. You definitely need to take a guided tour!
From what he saw, he mentally transfers you to that period of our history.
It is a pity that some children and adults behave tactlessly
A place of memory! It's a very psychologically difficult place. A huge open-air museum. There are many locations, there are both modern and interactive museums, as well as a large classical museum of the Brest Fortress. You can write a lot about this place for a long time. Who has never been, be sure to visit, it is very important. If you are a visitor, it is better to take a guide.
