The temple of the X century
The ancient Pitsunda temple stands out for its powerful shapes and dimensions (length — 39 m, width — 25 m, height with a dome - 29 m, wall thickness - 1.5 m) and belongs to the best monuments of Abkhazian medieval architecture. The temple is full of air and light, it was created for festive, solemn divine services. A 15th-century painting has been preserved in the southwestern part of the vestibule. Inside the dome there are 12 apostles and the face of Christ. From 1882 to 1917, the church was a courtyard of the Novoafon Monastery. The building has excellent acoustic properties, which made it possible to open an organ concert hall here in 1975. The organ installed here is made in Germany. It has about 4,000 pipes, 51 registers and 3 keys. The immortal music of Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Schubert sounds under the ancient vaults.
A great place for organ music lovers.
