Rabat fortress was restored and partially completed in 2012, it consists of 2 parts :historical and modern. The historical Turkish fortress of Rabat was built in the 16th and 17th centuries, when Akhaltsikhe was under the Ottoman Empire from 1568 and for more than 300 years, designed to protect the Turkish borders on the distant approaches. 300 years later, the nine thousandth Russian army under the command of General Paskevich liberated the city and fortress in an unequal battle with the 30 thousandth Turkish army. The Turks repeatedly tried to regain the fortress, but the Russian army under the command of General Muravyov no longer gave the Turks such an opportunity. In Soviet times, until 1965, a border detachment was located in the ruins of the fortress, then a garrison hospital, the remains of the fortress are well preserved. Now the fortress looks gorgeous, but it is a new model, built by analogy with famous Turkish fortresses, but the fact that part of the fortress was still restored gives Rabat a touch of antiquity and authenticity. The ancient aqueduct, through which water entered the fortress, has been completely preserved. The fortress has a magnificent mosque of the Pasha, his grave, a small Orthodox church, an acropolis, etc. In general, the fortress makes a wonderful impression, very interesting and informative excursions, the guides are great, they present everything with great love.. On the lower tier there is everything for a tourist holiday, good cafes and restaurants, delicious at home, Georgian cuisine is on top. There are many small family hotels with good service and, if desired, with food. From the fortress there is a beautiful view of the city of Akhaltsikhe.. Not far from the border with Turkey, there was a border zone, even at the invitation of friends and classmates there were problems. I do not specify prices, so everything is very different from the time of the year and the influx of tourists. My childhood on the border was spent in the fortress and the city, it was very interesting to see how both the city and Rabat have changed.
It's an amazing place. It is very atmospheric, beautiful, and cozy. The fortress enchants at any time of the day and year. It is worth visiting Georgia and Akhaltsikhe for her sake. I definitely recommend it!
An interesting fortress, partially restored. The Russian-speaking guide told us the history of this place, gave several interpretations of various historical events. The story was interesting and dynamic. Very beautiful views open from the walls and towers of the fortress. We recommend you to visit!
A large area. There is a place to walk, there is an opportunity to climb higher and look at the surroundings. There are many opportunities for photos and selfies. But since this is largely a modern reconstruction, the breath of time and history is not felt, alas. It feels more like an attraction.
