This is not a square, but the burial place of the Armenians of Constantinople. The Pangalti Armenian Cemetery was located on this site, where Armenians were buried for centuries. The Surb Hakob Armenian Hospital was located at this place
Now, anyone who walks on this "square" is literally walking on graves.
The cemetery was so large that Armenian graves are still being discovered in Taksim Square during the ongoing construction.
And, indeed, during the excavations carried out as part of the restoration of Taksim Square, 16 tombstones of an ancient Armenian cemetery were discovered. This was reported by the Turkish media back in 2013. However, the presence of more than a dozen tombstones did not confuse modern Turkish experts. Representatives of the Istanbul Department of Archaeological Museums, having studied the excavation site, came to the conclusion that "this object is located within the urban area, and no cultural layer has been found in the works carried out on Taksim Square and the slope of Kazanchi to date.

The square is a little empty, no benches, no trees. In the heat, people stand in the shade of the monument or sit there on the curb. It seemed that such a busy central street should end with something more cozy.
The square could be a good place for walking and having a good time. It's quite crowded, but it doesn't bother. People walk and take their time and don't create a fuss. On the one hand, more modern houses, on the other - older and classic. There are many cafes around, places where you can eat and enjoy desserts. But dirt, garbage and untidiness spoil the whole impression. There is one street adjacent to the square, which is just a slum, illegal sellers "from the floor" and annoying beggars.
