If you arrive in Almaty, then you definitely need to go to Kolsai Lake, and the road will be no less fascinating, mountains, gorgeous views, the contrast of the wasteland replaced by greenery.
I recommend renting a car and driving early in the morning to catch the Charyn Canyon.
There is a good restaurant right upstairs with a very cheerful waiter, prices after Moscow time will seem light, but more expensive than in the city.
I recommend using the services of "pesky" photographers, I usually bypass such services, but there are more than adequate guys who know their business, the photos will turn out great, for some pennies they took a live photo and received it electronically in great quality.

It's worth a trip!
It is a very picturesque place.
There are trout in the lake, small fish are visible. Naturally, your trip will be timed to coincide with a visit to the Charyn Canyon.
You also need to time a trip to Lake Kaindy, but it will not be so comfortable - 12 km on a UAZ over bumps. (We got a terrible one)
