Locals spread many legends about this church, about the legendary Nina and about her cross. About the royal family of Bagrationov and Tsar Irakli II, who in 1782 twinned Georgia and Russia for centuries!
You definitely need to look at the temple from the other side of the river from Jvari, there is a super view of the temple.
Find out when the choir sings and be sure to listen to this divine singing
A very atmospheric place! The view is amazing! I recommend reading about this place on Wikipedia before visiting it in order to fully experience its historicity.
A magnificent structure. It seems as if no words are enough to describe this majestic cathedral. This is, of course, a place of frenzied power and energy, which attracts, invites you to share its greatness and beauty.
Svetitskhoveli (from Georgian - the life-giving pillar) - the Cathedral of the Patriarchal Church of the Georgian Orthodox Church in honor of the Twelve Apostles, in the city of Mtskheta, which has been the main cathedral of the whole of Georgia for thousands of years. Among the preserved historical buildings, Svetitskhoveli is the largest in Georgia.
In the IV century, King Mirian III, who converted to Christianity, on the advice of Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, built the first wooden church in Georgia on the site of the modern temple, which has not survived to the present day. One of its foundations was the sacred trunk standing at the burial site of the robe of Christ, after which the temple is named.
In the second half of the fifth century, the pious King Vakhtang I Gorgasal built a basilica on the site of this church.
In the XI century, on the site of the damaged basilica, Catholicos Melkisedek I of Georgia erected a new temple, the now existing four-column cross-domed three-nave church in the name of the Twelve Apostles.
Svetitskhoveli is a fundamental temple in the style of architecture of medieval Georgia. The old paintings have not been preserved, and those present are from the XVI, XVII and possibly XVIII centuries (restored in the XIX century).
🏚️ The temple is surrounded by a fortress wall, which was erected by order of Tsar Heraclius II. The lower part of the two-tier wall is impenetrable, and there is a combat track in the upper part. The walls have 6 cylindrical and 2 quadrangular towers. The entrance gate is located on the south side, on the west side there is a belfry and a gate of the XI century - a wonderful example of Georgian folk architecture.
Throughout its existence, the cathedral served as a place of coronation and a tomb for representatives of the royal family of Bagration.
A strong place. Even if you are not a particularly religious person, visit and simply recharge the energy of the centuries-old temple. There are very few places that are simply "saturated" with history.
